Enriching Language Arts with Interactive Reading

Reading and language arts are more than just words on a page—they are about making meaningful connections, building confidence, and discovering the power of storytelling. At Educational Pathways Academy (EPA), a private school for dyslexia and learning disabilities in Florida, we utilize research-based strategies, such as interactive reading methods, to empower students with learning differences to excel in reading, comprehension, and life skills.

Building Comprehension and Confidence in Language Arts

Middle School Students, enjoy interactive reading, in Language Arts class, at Educational Pathways Academy, a private school, for dyslexia, and learning disabilities, in Florida

At EPA, middle school students participate in exciting activities like Partner Reading and Reader’s Theater as part of their Language Arts classes. These interactive methods help students strengthen their reading skills while also promoting social-emotional awareness, teamwork, and public speaking abilities in a supportive and creative environment.

Partner Reading is an activity in which students work in pairs, taking turns reading stories aloud. This activity encourages them to experiment with tone, pacing, and expression, helping to bring the text to life. As they engage with the material, students often experience 'a-ha' moments that enhance their understanding of the story’s meaning, themes, and character development. This process strengthens fluency and nurtures a stronger, more meaningful connection to the text, as students build confidence in their ability to interpret and discuss what they read.

Reader’s Theater focuses on dramatic group reading, where students practice reading with rhythm, pitch, and expression to convey emotions and themes effectively. Through rehearsal, students refine their fluency and comprehension while developing essential communication skills. Their hard work culminates in a presentation before an audience, where they gain confidence in public speaking and experience the power of storytelling in a shared, engaging way.

The Impact of Interactive Reading

Partner Reading and Reader’s Theater are strategies that improve fluency and significantly enhance reading comprehension. These approaches allow students to immerse themselves in the story, helping them understand the characters more deeply. As students listen to their peers read and express characterization through prosody, they view the text from different perspectives. The repeated practice strengthens their ability to interpret tone, pacing, and meaning—skills that are crucial for deeper comprehension.

For many of our students, reading aloud is more than just an activity—it represents a significant milestone in their literacy journey. As a school dedicated to students with language-based learning differences like dyslexia, we celebrate the courage, growth, and perseverance it takes to read expressively in front of peers and an audience. These experiences build not only fluency and comprehension but also self-confidence, resilience, and a true sense of achievement.
